Chelsea’s defence of the Premier League title got off to the worst possible start with a 3-2 defeat to Burnley but the performance of Alvaro Morata represented a silver lining, according to Jermaine Jenas.

The club’s record signing was introduced to the fray on the hour mark with his new side trailing 3-0 having been reduced to 10 men early on following Gary Cahill’s sending off.

Antonio Conte insulted by accusation he deliberately picked weakened Chelsea team

The Spain international helped turn the tide in Chelsea’s favour with an instinctive header just 10 minutes into his Premier League debut and nearly helped trigger an unlikely comeback.

Despite the defeat, former Tottenham and England star Jenas believes Morata produced enough in his short cameo to suggest the exiled Diego Costa won’t be missed.

He said: ‘The impact and difference Morata made when he was on the field was unbelievable.

‘And if Conte’s saying he’s not quite up to speed then I can’t wait to see him when he is up to full speed.

‘He did have a bit of Costa about him where he did ruffle a few feathers. He did put himself into challenges and won a few headers, he held up the ball and took his goal well.’
