Amazing bravery amid the horror of the ordinary people stepping in to help those in need

A woman who volunteered as an aid worker after witnessing horrifying ­suffering at her home in Syria said: “We have no option but to help.”

Fearless Manal Abazeed, 46, was an ­accountant before she joined the ranks of the White Helmets, the mercy teams credited with saving countless lives.

Up to a dozen women are now serving with the search and rescue organisation, also known as the Syrian Civil Defence, as the internal war marks its sixth anniversary.
