Barcelona legend Xavi has aimed a sly parting dig at Neymar after his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain by calling Lionel Messi the best player in the world and Luis Suarez the best striker.
The Catalan giants are reeling after losing the Brazilian forward to PSG in a world-record £199million move, which sent shock-waves across the footballing world.
Barca have since been trying to replace Neymar with big-name and big-money signings such as Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, but Xavi isn’t overly worried about the 25-year-old’s departure.
Speaking about Neymar’s exit, Xavi said Barcelona still have better players in Messi and Suarez up front, as well as quality everywhere else in the side that leaves them relatively unscathed.
‘It’s strange that a player does not want to stay in Barca. It is even very strange. It had not been 17 years since Luis Figo went to Real Madrid,’ Xavi told Le Parisien.
‘He did not give any explanation. He left Barca without giving a press conference or anything.’
He added: ‘We have Messi, the best player in the world, Suarez, the best striker. (Gerard) Pique, (Andres) Iniesta, (Sergio) Busquets – the best in (the world in) their positions.’
Most expensive players ever
Paul Pogba – £89m (Juventus to Man Utd, 2016)
Gareth Bale – £86m (Tottenham to Real Madrid, 2013)
Cristiano Ronaldo – £80m (Man Utd to Real Madrid, 2009)
Gonzalo Higuain (£75.3m (Napoli to Juventus, 2016)
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said Neymar was the best player in the world upon his arrival in the French capital, but it still seems true that he was not held to such high regard at his previous club.
Xavi’s latest comments will only make Neymar feel justified in seeking to swap Barca for PSG in order to further his career.
