Winter can leave your skin looking dull and dehydrated so now is the time to boost your complexion in time for spring.
Dermatologist, Dr Susan Mayou, gave us some tips on on how to improve the condition of your skin:
1. Wear suncream on your body. “Even a small amount of daily sun exposure without protection can cause premature ageing – which can lead to a reduction in skin elasticity,” says Dr Susan. On your body that means saggy knees and upper arms!
2, Fake tan. If you’re a regular faker, make sure you’re exfoliating well between applications, as the ingredients that tint your skin can also make it more dry and patchy.
3. Eczema. If you have persistent dryness, especially on your upper arms and hands, you may have eczema – a condition that causes skin to become red and flakey. If so, be careful to opt for hypoallergenic lotions.
4. Exercise. “Regular exercise improves muscle tone, which helps support skin and also boost elasticity,” says Dr Susan. Try incorporating a weekly pilates or yoga, to help keep your skin firm.
Here are four new body lotions our team have tried and tested.
The formula: From a new eco range where all the products are 97% natural, and free from sulphates, parabens and petrochemicals, all at a high street price. This lotion delivers its hydrating and nourishing effects with a tropical smell.
Beauty editor Octavia says: “It smooths on beautifully, sinks in like a dream, smells gloriously of sunshine and coconuts, and left no tacky residue, so I could put on tights immediately.”
The formula: A thick butter with rhubarb extract, coconut oil, cocoa and shea butter to help leave skin moisturised and smooth.
Beauty director Lynne says: “Absolutely mouth-watering. But it’s not just a pretty scent, this indulgent cream has been great on my dry, itchy legs too.”
The formula: Made with honey from a rainforest in Ethiopia and almond oil,
this lotion is packed with skin-softening nutrients from The Body Shop’s Community Trade sources.
Features writer Rosie says: “This smells amazing, without being sickly sweet. It has a light texture that goes on easily, but somehow manages to moisturise as if it’s a much heavier cream. It keeps my skin soft all day, and I’m hooked!”
The formula: Hyaluronic acid, LHA (to firm and smooth skin) and 10 types of oil mean this lotion has a balm-like texture, an instant glowy effect and long-lasting hydrating effects.
Beauty writer Zoe says: “I’m not usually keen on thick cream – I hate how the product gets under my nails – but THIS I love. It sinks in so quickly and makes my skin feel unbelievably soft. It also has a subtle, pearlescent finish that makes dull skin look healthier.”
