A champion bodybuilder broke his neck in South Africa this week after attempting a backflip during a competition.

Sifiso Lungelo Thabete died after landing on his head in front of a horrified crowds.

Thabete, who was a former junior world bodybuilding champion, remained motionless on the floor following the incident.

Bodybuilding magazine Muscle Evolution reported the incident, which happened on Saturday.

It announced: ‘The bodybuilding community was shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the death of Sifiso Lungelo Thabete, a bodybuilder from Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal, at the weekend.

‘He impressed the crowd and the judges with unbelievable muscle size and maturity beyond his age.’

After video of his tragic death went viral, there was an outpouring of sympathy on social media.

Thabete’s funeral service will be held at K Section Hall in Durban on Saturday.
