The information he supplied to the police led to the conviction of 17 men and one woman from a gang that targetting and groomed 108 potential victims between 2011 and 2014.

Despite his past crimes, XY believes he should be praised for his work.

He told The Sun: ‘If it wasn’t for me I know they wouldn’t have got those people. Nobody else could have got into the circles that I got into.

‘I’ve put hundreds of people behind bars over the years — I’m not the bad guy here.

‘Yes, I may have had a bad past but when I left prison I tried to make a difference. I wanted to give something back to society.’

Since the story of police paying XY for his work came out, the child rapist has reportedly had a bounty put on his head and has 24-hour police protection.

He added: ‘What I did sounds heroic, but I understand the public still see me as a sex offender.

‘I see everything people are saying now and I feel hard done by. No matter what anybody says, I have done the right thing.’

XY even took credit for ‘cleaning up the streets’ of Newcastle.

The NSPCC said it was ‘appalled’ that a convicted child rapist would be used by the police in this way.
