The Hollywood couple broke hearts worldwide when they announced that they were separating on Sunday after eight years of marriage in a joint social media announcement.

However, although there were rumours that the pair called time on their marriage due to their differing views of the future of their family – Anna wanted to settle down and have more kids and Chris allegedly wanted to focus on his career while he’s at the top of his game – new reports suggest something else.

According to insiders, the competitive couple faced trouble as the 38-year-old’s career began to take off with roles like Guardians Of The Galaxy and Jurassic World while his wife, whose career was on the rise earlier on in their relationship, was no longer ‘getting any big jobs’.

A source told US Weekly: ‘Chris became this huge movie star and Anna wasn’t getting any big jobs. She was the more famous and sexy one at the start of their relationship and then things took a turn.

‘When they’re in a big group, they each want to be the one telling the funniest joke.’

Referring to Chris’s new found A-list status, another source claimed: ‘It definitely caused tension in their marriage.’

The pair, who are parents to a 4-year-old son called Jack, issued the joint announcement of their split on Sunday which read: ‘We are sad to announce we are legally separating. We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed.

‘Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward.

‘We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another.’

Reps for Chris and Anna have been contacted for comment by Metro.co.uk.
