'Complacent' Theresa May needs to pull her finger out on EU exit deal, MPs warn

Britain will be plunged into chaos unless Theresa May starts making plans for failure to get a Brexit deal with our EU partners.

And on Sunday a powerful committee of MPs will accuse the PM of being complacent about leaving the EU with no agreement.

They say unless she pulls her finger out she will be guilty of “dereliction of duty.”

The Commons Foreign Affairs Committee says that if we end up empty handed after the two-year negotiation EU citizens in Britain and UK ones in Europe will still not know where they stand.

There will be ongoing disputes over the exit bill, which could run as high as £50billion. And customs post would need to be hastily set up to police a new border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Tory chairman Crispin Blunt said: “There is no evidence to indicate serious contingency planning is underway.

“The Government’s failure to plan for a Leave vote was an act of gross negligence. This Government must not make a comparable mistake.”

No deal means that current EU regulations would enter a legal minefield and Britain would end up trading at a huge disadvantage under World Trade Organisation rules.

The MPs call on every Whitehall department to produce a ‘no deal’ plan.

Mr Blunt added: “Anything less would be a dereliction of duty. There is a real prospect that negotiations will fail.”
