Pierce Harris’ past came back to haunt him in a tense double episode of Emmerdale as Vanessa Woodfield tracked down his mum Martha and she confronted him over a dark mistake from the past. But, as a worried Rhona Goskirk started to doubt her controlling husband to be, just what is it that he is hiding?

Whatever happened in the past is clearly significant enough for Martha to be able to say that she hopes Rhona finds out what type of man Pierce is. Ahead of the horrifying events that unfold next week where Pierce subjects his new wife to a brutal and disgusting attack, are the warning signs in place to suggest that Pierce has committed rape before?

After Vanessa tracked Martha down, Pierce was shaken to see her and he lashed out at his mum, throwing insults at her and walking away.

Concerned Martha later spoke to Rhona, making it clear that Pierce’s recollection of his childhood may have been exaggerated and insisting that she always loved him.

When Martha then told Rhona to ask Pierce about a mistake he made in the past, Rhona couldn’t help but be shaken and when Pierce learned that Martha was making his fiancee think twice, he confronted his mother at the B and B, issuing her with threats as she told him that she had hoped he might have changed as a man.

Later, when Rhona brought up the mistake, Pierce denied all knowledge but then called off the wedding, making it clear that he is hiding something sinister from his wife.

Viewers already know that Pierce is deeply controlling and malicious and has terrible issues with his temper and his attitudes towards women and all of this will manifest itself in horrifying scenes that will change Rhona’s life forever and leave her feeling terrified of her violent husband.

With Pierce then coldly dismissing his actions and even suggesting that Rhona asked for what happened, Rhona has her eyes opened – but will she feel able to try and escape him? Or, like seemingly Tess before her, is she about to find herself trapped in a horrendous life with an abusive man?

And what dark incidents are still waiting to emerge from Pierce’s past?

Emmerdale continues on Friday 21st April at 7pm on ITV.
