Gareth Southgate at Everton to watch Ross Barkley ahead of England's friendly with Germany

Ross Barkley is facing an England audition today – with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate at Goodison Park to watch the midfield star.

Southgate has chosen to watch Everton’s clash with West Brom today as he prepares to announce his first England squad since being handed the role permanently last November.

And it’s a chance for 23-year-old Barkley to stake a claim for a recall after winning his last England cap against Australia last May at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in the build up to Euro 2016 in France.

Barkley wasn’t included in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Euro’s last summer. And he was ditched by both Sam Allardyce and Southgate when they named their squad’s earlier this season.

Barkley has returned to form recently after clashing with Everton boss Ronald Koeman with the Dutchman criticising the midfielder’s performances

Now, though, he has a chance to impress and make Thursday’s squad to face Germany in Dortmund on March 22.

Southgate will also get to make a good assessment of Leighton Baines, youngster Tom Davies and Baggies keeper Ben Foster.
