With just hours to go before the new Doctor is revealed, there’s a new favourite for the role – Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker.
The actress – who played Beth Latimer in all three series of the smash hit ITV drama – had previously been only fourth favourite to take over the key to the Tardis, with odds of 25-1 just four days ago.
However now Ladbrokes have said that she is 5-4 to take over where Peter Capaldi left off, and become the first woman to play the Doctor in a series of the show.
Of course the fact that Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall is the new showrunner might just have fuelled speculation that she is involved.
The BBC announced news of the big reveal on Friday, with a new teaser video revealing the identity of the next Doctor will be announced on Sunday 16th July after the Wimbledon Men’s Singles final.
Others in the running include actor Kris Marshall at 2-1 – who fuelled rumours of his involvement with the role when he abruptly quit BBC One’s Death In Paradise earlier this year.
Meanwhile Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge is next in the betting at 4-1.
The actress has repeatedly denied involvement with the show, but rumours of her being the next Doctor have never quite gone away – with a recent YouTube interview in which she was asked about it outright and remained decidedly cagey only furthering those rumours.
Not too much longer to wait now, people…
