A polar bear has been filmed headbutting the glass of a zoo enclosure as it apparently attempts to make a lunge for a little girl’s penguin toy.
Emma Garrett ran and jumped around in excitement in front of the polar bear enclosure at Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri, USA.
After making a friend in the resident polar bear, Kali, the four-year-old was filmed showing off her newest cuddly companion to him.
She can be seen holding the toy – a multi-coloured penguin she picked up from the zoo gift shop – out with pride.
As she does so, the polar bear slides its paws and face down the glass to get a better look at Emma and her new prized possession.
But suddenly, mistaking the toy for prey, the polar bear leaps and thrashes itself down towards Emma and the penguin, headbutting the glass with an almighty thud.
Thankfully, dad Andy was on hand to quickly shepherd Emma away.
He said: “Everyone was so shocked, we couldn’t get away quickly enough.
“It was clear the polar bear was very agitated and didn’t like the penguin very much, so tried to attack Emma and the toy.
“We didn’t want him to hurt himself anymore so we left very quickly.”
He added: “Everyone just gasped and there was a lot of screaming.
“Emma was slightly shaken up but quickly got over it when we took her to see the penguins.”
