For 11 years the brash rookie racing car Lightning McQueen has been voiced by Owen Wilson.

His voice has bought fun and comfort and laughter to Pixar fans all around the globe but as Cars 3 hits cinemas, a story that sees Lightning’s story come full circle, Wilson admits that the door to another film has been left ‘slightly ajar’ and he would ‘be sad to see it come to an end’.

‘I love playing Lightning McQueen, I think it’s one of my favourite characters,’ Wilson told Metro.co.uk speaking as he promoted the new Pixar film, the first featuring the anthropomorphic cars in six years.

In Cars 3, life pulls a full 360 for Lightning, giving his story a sense of completion from the cocky pupil in the first movie to the teacher at the end of the new film.

Where will Lightning go next though?

‘Someone was talking about him becoming an Uber driver but that won’t happen,’ laughed Wilson.

‘I would like to see… I don’t know, I can’t imagine what Pixar would come up with and I wouldn’t want to box them in.’

But will Wilson be back?

‘Of course’ he will.

Cars 3 is out in cinemas now.
