Sir Patrick Stewart said he fancied having a crack at Strictly Come Dancing.

The actor is a fan of the celebrity dancing competition when it first started, and considered putting donning the sequins and fake tan himself.

But he admitted he was put off when the BBC show ‘changed tone’.

As presenter of Have I Got News For You, Patrick said: ‘It’s a lovely show. It’s delightful.’

When asked if he’d ever taken to the Strictly ballroom he revealed: ‘I wanted to at the beginning but the tone of it changed somewhat and I felt that… I could pass.’

Panelist and Pointless co-host Richard Osman quipped: ‘You thought “Yeah I’ll do Mr Poop instead”.’

Richard was referring to Stewart’s voice role in The Emoji Movie, in which he plays the poo emoji, Poop.

Sir Patrick quipped: ‘I said I would only do it if I could play a role with substance.’

Paul Merton added: ‘One with a high moral fibre.’

‘You didn’t want to go through the motions,’ Richard added.

During the episode Patrick put on the Cerebro helmet worn by his X-Men character Professor Charles Xavier.

It may be the last time we see him do that for a little while, as he recently confirmed he would be stepping down from the superhero franchise after an emotional screening of Logan, in which he stars alongside Hugh Jackman.

He said: ‘Here we are, the two X-Men wiping away the tears at our own movie! And then I thought while we were watching, “My God, this is a goodbye ending. What could I possibly do that could top this”?

‘As I’ve lived with that idea over the past few days, I thought: “Yeah, it’s absolutely right that we should both of us just move on now.” The franchise won’t die.’
