Sister Sledge star Joni Sledge has passed away aged 60.
The band’s publicist said the singer was found dead at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday.
“On yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We welcome your prayers as we weep the loss of our sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin Joni Sledge,” the family said in a statement.
“We thank you for privacy as we hurt for her presence, but also for embracing her radiance and the sincerity with which she loved life.”
A cause of death is yet to be released.
The official Twitter page for the Grammy-nominated group paid tribute to the star.
Alongside a picture, they wrote simply: “We love you Joni.”
Sister Sledge, who formed in 1971, consisted of sisters Debbie, Kim, Kathy, and Joni.
In 1979 they shot to fame with their We Are Family album, which eventually went Platinum.
The hit disco anthem We Are Family earned them a Grammy Award nod.
Last November they performed on The X Factor as part of their UK promo tour.
She leaves behind her son and sisters.
