Stricken Emirates airliner pictured circling over northern UK after landing gear fails immediately after take-off

A passenger jet bound for Dubai was forced to circle over Yorkshire for almost half an hour after its landing gear failed shortly after take off.

The Emirates A380 aircraft had taken off from Manchester Airport just after 1.30pm today for the seven hour journey to the United Arab Emirates.

But the huge jet, which has the capacity to carry 853 passengers, had barely been in the air when it encountered problems.

Eye-witnesses on the ground told Manchester Evening News that flight EK18 was circling over Dewsbury for more than 20 minutes.
