We’re not far from the August 18th debut of Netflix’s superhero team up extravaganza, The Defenders.
It’s set to unite Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, bringing each one together from their own shows to fight a new evil that threatens New York.
It looks set to be television’s answer to The Avengers – an eight-part epic on a whole new scale.
There’s just one problem though – what if you can’t remember what happened in the other shows? It’s been a while, after all, and you probably don’t have the time to binge watch them all ahead of The Defenders’ August 18 broadcast date.
No need to worry – here’s your explanation of everything that happened in Jessica Jones…
What happened in Jessica Jones?
Jessica Jones is a cynical, self-destructive private investigator.
She also has superpowers and spent a brief spell trying to be a hero – until a run-in with Kilgrave.
Kilgrave has the ability to control others; he took Jessica prisoner, controlling her, sexually abusing her, and making her murder someone for him.
When Jessica encountered Kilgrave again while investigating another case, discovering he’d been controlling a wider group of people, she begins working to stop him – permanently.
How did it end?
After a lengthy game of cat-and-mouse with Kilgrave, Jessica eventually – finally – reaches one final confrontation with him.
His power over her broken, Jessica kills him – a moment of catharsis that had been a long time coming.
The series closed on one final shot of Jessica in her office, taking a call for the next case…
Unresolved plot threads
Jessica Jones also introduced Luke Cage – here he was a supporting character and love interest for Jessica, before spinning off into his own series.
Their relationship was intense but fraught, and ended without any reconciliation – you can guarantee that when they meet again in The Defenders, things will get similarly heated.
There’s also the question of where Jessica and Kilgrave got their powers from.
While Kilgrave got his as a result of experiments done by his parents, it’s implied that they was part of a wider group – the mysterious IGH.
The suggestion is that IGH are behind Jessica’s powers – they could prove to be the antagonist of Jessica Jones series two, or surface in The Defenders as well…
