Unilever first-quarter sales top expectations

LONDON Consumer goods maker Unilever (ULVR.L) (UNc.AS) reported a surprise acceleration in quarterly sales on Thursday, helped by price increases.

The results could boost investor enthusiasm for the maker of Dove soap and Knorr soups, whose shares have gained since February when it swiftly rejected a $143 billion (£111.96 billion) takeover offer from rival Kraft Heinz (KHC.O), which prompted it to undertake a wide-ranging review of its business.
