Violent British fugitive captured in Benidorm after dramatic police chase around packed tourist swimming pool

A violent British fugitive described as “very dangerous” and possibly armed has reportedly been arrested in Benidorm following a police chase around a tourist complex and packed swimming pool.

Listed as one of the UK’s most wanted men, Gareth Bryan Edwards, 25, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was wanted by authorities for “crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation.”

In a Crimestoppers-style appeal, Edwards was named by Spanish national police alongside nine other fugitives including drug dealers, killers and a member of the Italian Mafia.

He was facing three life sentences before he escaped the UK.

Police suspected he had fled to Spain and believed he was involved in drug trafficking.

Eagle-eyed officers patrolling the holiday resort thought they recognised him from one of the “most wanted” posters.

Spanish newspapers says Edward was approached on Friday night when he was walking down a busy street full of holidaymakers towards a British pub.

When asked for identification, he allegedly produced a passport which was not his, belonging to a person of another nationality.

Police then asked him some more questions and not being satisfied with his answers, asked him to come with them to the local station.

It was at this stage, La Razon reports, that Edwards allegedly pushed the officers and ran off towards holiday apartments where he was found hiding near the swimming pool.

Once arrested, he was searched and allegedly found to have three packages of cocaine and a list of clients.

Edwards has already appeared before a Spanish judge who remanded him in custody.

The case has now passed into the hands of the National Police and Interpol.

Spanish police appealed last November for the public’s help in catching Edwards.

In a statement, they said: “Gareth Bryan Edwards, 25, from Aylesbury in the United Kingdom.

“Wanted by the British authorities through a European Arrest Warrant with a maximum anticipated punishment of three life sentences for the crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation.

“He is a very dangerous person and is probably armed and carrying drugs.”
