Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the new star of Doctor Who, taking over from Peter Capaldi when he leaves at Christmas.
A trailer that screened at the end of the Wimbledon men’s final revealed the actress will be stepping into the TARDIS, and will be the first woman to do so.
Jodie, 35, said: ‘I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor.
‘It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.’
But who is Jodie Whittaker and where have you seen her before?
Most recently Jodie played Beth Latimer in hit crime drama Broadchurch, a grieving mum whose son had been murdered. She played Beth for all three series of the show.
She also played Sam in Joe Cornish’s hit Attack The Block, and fans of the St Trinian’s films will also recognise her as Beverly.
Jodie has also been in Black Mirror and BBC period drama Cranford opposite Judi Dench and Imelda Staunton.
She has recently finished shooting Journeyman directed by Paddy Considine and will be playing the lead role in new BBC drama series Trust Me.
