A woman was allowed to divorce her husband after he ignored her messages.

A judge in Taiwan granted the separation after the woman, surnamed Lin, complained her partner had not returned messages on the Line app when she was taken to hospital after a car crash.

The woman in her 50s proved to the family court, in Hsinchu district, that he had received the correspondence by showing the message tick symbols on the messages.

Judge Kao ruled earlier this month this was sufficient evidence to show their marriage had suffered irreparable damage.

Her ruling said: ‘The defendant did not inquire about the plaintiff, and the information sent by the plaintiff was read but not replied to.’

‘The couple’s marriage is beyond repair.’

He did manage to make one visit to the hospital and he also eventually sent her a single message but instead of asking about her condition he mentioned their dog.

There were also other problems that convinced Judge Kao the marriage was going nowhere.

Lin’s husband, who is in his 40s, was struggling with money and she was paying most of the bills at their home, which they shared with his family.

At one point her husband’s mother even apparently suggested she loan money to pay taxes owed by her father-in-law.

His family were also mean to her and would monitor her shower time and how much hot water she used, the court documents alleged.

But despite all of this, it was the app’s read receipts that really convinced Judge Kao.

She added: ‘Now internet communication is very common, so these can be used as evidence. In the past, we needed written hardcopy evidence.’

It was Lin’s second marriage, and she was married to him for five years.
