Iran: Hassan Rouhani reelected as president in landslide victory

Iran’s voters have given a strong backing to Hassan Rouhani in the country’s landmark election, winning a second four-year term to see out his agenda calling for greater freedoms and outreach to the wider world. 

The reformist President took a commanding lead over the hardliner Ebrahim Raisi as results started coming in from across the country and was declared the winner by Iran’s state television which offered its congratulations in a brief statement. 

 Two other candidates, Mostafa Mirsalim and Mostafa Hashemitaba are not expected to win more than a few per cents of the vote.
